Episode 27: A journey through time – Discovering the rich heritage of Étampes

In this immersive episode, I invite you to join me on an electric skateboard adventure through the historic town of Étampes in Essonne, accompanied by the talented Nideuxskywheeler (Instagram) on his gyrowheel. Our exploration is a captivating blend of ancient charm, architectural wonders and centuries-old history.

Étampes Tourist Office

Our journey begins at the Étampes Tourist Office, located in the historic Hôtel Anne de Pisseleu, a building dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. This architectural gem testifies to the rich heritage of the town and is classified as a historic monument.

Continuing our walk, we arrive at the Étampes Town Hall, a symbol of local governance. Its imposing presence echoes the historical importance of the city.

Collegiate Church of Our Lady of the Fort of Etampes (Collegiate Church of Our Lady of the Fort of Etampes)

Our journey takes us to the impressive Collégiale Notre-Dame-du-Fort, a construction spanning from 1130 to the first half of the 13th century. This architectural masterpiece has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1840.

Saint-Basile d’Étampes Church (Saint-Basile d’Étampes Church)

Next, the Church of Saint-Basile, an ancient church whose roots date back to the 11th century. Although the original structure was destroyed, the church we see today was built in the 12th century and is a testament to the times.

The Diane de Poitiers Library

The Diane de Poitiers Library, installed within the Hôtel Diane-de-Poitiers, a 16th century mansion. The U-shaped building has a courtyard and garden, which now house the library. It is a blend of historical charm and cultural significance.

Étampes Station

Passing in front of the bustling Étampes station, we appreciate the connectivity of the city and the importance of its transport hub.

Guinette Tower

Our adventure takes a historic turn when we arrive at the old Tour Guinette, a 12th century tower which once served as a keep for the Château d’Etampes.

Bastille Des Portereaux (Portereaux Bastille)

Continuing our walk, we pass in front of the Bastille Des Portereaux, with these fortified floodgates whose origins date back to 1514.

Leaning Tower of Saint Martin d’Étampes

Our exploration takes us to the iconic Leaning Tower of Saint Martin d’Étampes, a Romanesque gem with a 1.12 meter inclined bell tower. This remarkable church dates back to the mid-12th century.

Étampes Leisure Island

We venture to the Île de Loisirs d’Étampes, an idyllic oasis offering recreational activities and a peaceful escape.

Saint Gilles Church (Saint Gilles Church)

Continuing our journey, we discover the Saint Gilles Church, a 12th century church whose architectural grace testifies to the city’s lasting heritage.

Rue du Pont Doré

Our walk ends with a charming stroll along the flowery rue du Pont Doré, where we cross a charming bridge covered in flowers.

Hugo Fountain

Finally, we pass by the Fontaine Hugo, an integral part of the town’s heritage. This fountain, a generous gift from the former jeweler Emile Hugo, originally from Étampes, occupies a special place in the heart of the town.
