Episode 25 – Joigny, France: A journey through history and charm
Welcome to episode 25 of our electrifying adventure series! Today we invite you to join us for a captivating ride through the charming town of Joigny, France. Our journey begins when we arrive from Rue Dans le Château and circle around the imposing Saint-Thibault Church, a magnificent landmark. This impressive church has a beautiful Gothic architectural style, adorned with intricate stone carvings and captivating stained glass windows that depict biblical stories.
By standing in front of the entrance of the church, we take advantage of the grandeur of the Porte Saint Jean. This historic gate, with the adjacent ramparts, occupies a special place in the heritage of Joigny, since it is classified as a historic monument. Fortified walls and watchtowers offer a glimpse into the city’s medieval past, highlighting its strategic importance throughout history.
Continuing our exploration, we venture to the other side of Porte Saint Jean, where the impressive Maison de Bailliage stands. This wooden house, dating from the 16th century, is also listed as a historic monument. The elaborate timber frame and charming architecture provide insight into life for the city’s elite during the Renaissance era.
Going down rue Montant au Palais, you will discover the charming Maison du Pilori. The intricately designed half-timbered facade of the 16th-century building is another listed historical monument. Admiring the ornate carvings and decorative designs, we are transported back in time, imagining the bustling market stalls and bustling atmosphere that once filled the streets.
Turning right at the House of the Tree of Jesse on rue Gabriel Cortel, you can admire its remarkable façade. The wooden frames represent the genealogy of Christ, inspired by the Gospel of Saint Matthew. This unique depiction of biblical history adds a spiritual touch to the architectural marvels of Joigny.
Continuing down Rue Gabriel Cortel, we find ourselves under a canopy of over 300 colorful umbrellas, creating a unique and picturesque street scene. The brightly colored umbrellas provide a cheerful and artistic contrast to the historic buildings, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
As we glide along the quays of the Yonne, we pass in front of the Joigny Tourist Office. The electric skateboard propels us quickly, and we turn left to go up rue de la Guimbarde. Our route takes us to the vibrant Place de la République, where we pass the Palais de Justice, which houses the historic listed chapel of the Ferrand family. The medieval architecture of this beautiful chapel and its intricate stained glass windows reflect the town’s rich religious heritage.
Our journey does not end there; we pass in front of the beautiful Saint-André de Joigny church. The elegant design of the church, with its graceful arches and its imposing bell tower, testifies to Joigny’s attachment to the preservation of its historical monuments.
Finally, we take the road again following the rue Notre Dame, where we take advantage of the shaded terrace of a café. The bustling atmosphere and friendly vibe of the café perfectly complements the tranquil beauty of the city.
